Dubai; A Superlative City

The emergence of Dubai struck the world in awe. From The Burj Al Arab hotel to Palm-Jumeirah Island, it captures the economical steady in just a few years. Dubai evolves around 300 years, unexpectedly from a small fishing village to modern and superlative city. Here we can trace urban development in Dubai, where this place was always changed until what we can see now. If we looked back in history, urban developing in Dubai prevents Qawassim pirates attack in the late 19th century. Dubai comes out as great city after its independence in 1971 from British empire.

A factor that involves in building a great city is depends at its economy status and development. All of the infrastructures and development are to attract foreign investors, where with great rise of currencies flowwill generate more development. The incoming investors from outside brings along more job vacancies. Migrant workers started to move toward the land where great job opportunities available in Dubai. Recent studies had shown Dubai’s population increase due to incoming migrant workers. Migrant workers are from professionals, engineers, and trader to construction site workers

Much more to view on how Dubai beautifully evolve into a standard modern city. But for a round up, basically it is more on to the economics side that bring out Dubai to the world scene.

Crimson affair

Last week all news paper’s front page was all about tragic death of Nurin Jazirin. This lovely girl found cramp in small sport bag, had several cuts and bruises on her body, believed to be raped before she was murdered. The case created a tense atmosphere in Malaysia, even our PM showed concern with what had happened.

The ability walking safely in neighborhood is snatch from us. It was not safe anymore when we step outside our own house. Crime rate is said to be decrease over the few years by police department, but often news of crimes (murder, robbery, rape, etc) reported daily gave us the impression that our country was not safe anymore. Crime rate obviously increase as the result of incoming illegal migrants. Malaysia, especially in Klang Valley was infested with illegal migrants, many of them working in labour sectors. All sorts of migrant we can observed, Nepalese, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesian, and also Philippines. To look into this matter, we need to understand the topics on migration and migrant.

In the local scene, migration from rural to urban area happened because attractions of highly paid jobs were mostly in the urban area. Factories and industrial sectors focus on the urban area rather than rural, where urban areas have much more facilities (hospitals, bank), infrastructure (road system, railway, and shops) and hostility (houses, community). Not only industrial sectors, but also agricultural sectors recruit migrant workers as the result of low labour cost. Additionally, migrant went for a better place where jobs are on demand. The willingness to do heavy and risky jobs are a factor employee recruit migrant from rural area and also migrant that came from other countries. The opening of early towns in Malaysia are because the migration of workers to urban area to get jobs and also better lifestyle. Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh are merely occupied until British, with their own economy agenda, bring in migrants from China. There we can see that economy plays important factors that linked to urbanization.
